Khao Khanap Nam Cave, Cave entrance in Krabi Province, Thailand
Khao Khanap Nam is a cave entrance set between two limestone hills rising about 100 meters (330 feet) on opposite sides of the Krabi River. The caves sit at the base of these formations and create a natural passage over the water.
Excavations inside the cave uncovered human skeletal remains and artifacts showing that prehistoric people once lived in these formations. The findings indicate the caves served as shelter for ancient inhabitants thousands of years ago.
The name describes how the mountains sit along the water, reflecting their relationship with the river. Today, visitors experience this connection firsthand as they pass through the caves between the two limestone hills.
A longtail boat ride from Chao Fah Pier in Krabi Town takes about 15 minutes to reach the caves. Traveling by boat is the way to experience the full passage through the formations and view both hills from the water.
Inside the cave, displays recreate prehistoric scenes, including a representation of an excavation site with ancient skeletal remains. These artistic installations show how the cave was studied and what archaeologists discovered within.
