Wat Phu Khao Thong, Buddhist temple in Phukhao Thong, Thailand.
Wat Phu Khao Thong is a Buddhist temple in Ayutthaya featuring a striking chedi that rises about 80 meters (260 feet) and is topped with a golden sphere. The structure sits on elevated ground and commands views across the surrounding plains.
The temple was founded in 1387 and underwent major renovation in the 1700s during King Boromakot's reign. At that time the original Mon-style chedi was replaced with a structure built in the Thai architectural tradition.
The temple serves as a gathering place for Buddhist ceremonies where you can observe monks performing daily rituals. Local people come here to pray and make offerings during religious festivals.
The temple is open daily to visitors and is best reached by tuk-tuk from Ayutthaya. Wear comfortable shoes as you will need to climb stairs to reach the top of the chedi.
The temple houses a sacred Buddha footprint brought from Saraburi, which holds special religious significance for pilgrims. This rare relic attracts visitors who come specifically to pay respects to this holy object.
