Mahidol University, Research university in Salaya district, Bangkok, Thailand
Mahidol University is a research university in the Salaya district, with main facilities spread across several locations in Bangkok. The largest campus extends over forested land west of the city center and houses faculty buildings, dormitories, and specialized clinics.
The institution began in 1888 as Siriraj Hospital Medical School and trained the first generation of Thai physicians. Its current name was granted in 1969 to honor Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who brought modern medical education to Thailand.
The campus displays Thai architecture alongside modern research buildings, where students and faculty from across the country work together. Public areas regularly host health campaigns and scientific lectures open to the local community.
Most areas are open to visitors during business hours, though some research facilities require advance notice. Large green spaces between buildings make orientation easier, and signage appears in both Thai and English.
The library houses a rare collection of manuscripts on traditional Thai medicine found nowhere else in Southeast Asia. These texts document centuries-old healing practices still studied by researchers today.
