Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, Luxury hotel on Chao Phraya River, Bangkok, Thailand
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok spreads across multiple wings along the riverbank with 393 rooms, eight restaurants, and traditional Thai architectural elements throughout the property. The building combines classic design features with modern facilities distributed across different levels.
The hotel was founded in 1876 as The Oriental and was Thailand's first hotel, later serving as a Japanese Army base during World War II. After the war ended, the property underwent significant revival under new leadership.
The Authors' Wing connects the hotel to the literary world through suites named after celebrated writers who stayed there during their travels. These rooms tie the property to a tradition of hosting creative figures and weaving their stories into the place itself.
The hotel offers direct river access with boat services to Bangkok attractions, while extensive amenities like wellness centers and spa facilities are available. The waterside location enables easy movement to various sights throughout the city.
Photographer Germaine Krull managed the hotel in 1947 and introduced new hospitality standards that supported recovery after wartime occupation. Her innovations continue to shape the way the property operates and serves guests today.
