General Post Office, Bangkok, Historic postal building in Bang Rak District, Thailand
The General Post Office is a five-story building that combines Art Deco and International Style elements through symmetrical wings and geometric patterns across its facade. The architects Sarot Sukkhayang and Mew Aphaiwong designed it with balanced proportions and smooth surfaces that create visual harmony throughout the structure.
The building opened in 1940 on the site of the former British Legation, marking Thailand's shift toward independent modern administration and architectural expression. This period reflected the country's determination to establish its own identity through government institutions.
The building represents Thailand's desire to modernize its government presence and connect with international architectural trends. You can see this ambition in the clean lines and confident design that reflects how the country viewed itself at the time.
The ground floor maintains working post office counters, while upper levels house the Thailand Creative & Design Center, open to visitors since 2017. You can explore both sections inside the building, though the different areas may have varying opening times.
The building received the ASA Architectural Conservation Award for successfully blending contemporary design elements with its historical features without compromising either. This recognition shows how carefully the restoration balanced old and new aspects.
