Holy Rosary Church, church in Bangkok, Thailand
Holy Rosary Church is a church building in Talat Noi with Neo-Gothic architecture from the 19th century. The cream-colored structure has a cross-shaped floor plan with a distinctive pointed steeple, pointed-arch windows with stained glass, and a statue of the Virgin Mary beneath a round window on the main facade.
The church was founded in 1787 by Portuguese settlers after they left Ayutthaya and was originally built as a wooden structure. After fire damage, it was rebuilt in 1891 during the reign of King Rama V in the Neo-Gothic style that defines its appearance today.
The church is also known as Kalawar Church and reflects the presence of Portuguese Catholics in Bangkok. Today it serves as a place where people from different backgrounds gather to worship or appreciate its historical design.
The building is open daily from early morning until late afternoon and entry is free. You can reach the church easily by public transport, including several bus lines, the Saphan Taksin BTS station, or boats on the Chao Phraya River.
The fourteen paintings inside depict the Passion of Christ and are considered, along with the stained glass windows, among the finest works of their kind in Thailand. The combination of European design and riverside location creates a place that stands apart from the surrounding city.
