Wat Ang Kaeo, Buddhist temple in Bang Wa district, Bangkok, Thailand
Wat Ang Kaeo is a Buddhist temple in Bang Wa district that sits beside Khlong Phasi Charoen canal, facing Siam University across the waterway. The structure follows traditional Thai architectural design and features detailed mural paintings throughout its interior spaces.
This temple originates from the Ayutthaya period and underwent major restoration work during the reigns of King Rama III and King Rama V. These renovations shaped much of what visitors see today.
The interior walls display carefully painted scenes from Buddha's life story. Visitors can see how these artworks, especially the depiction of Māhāmāyā receiving her son in heaven, form an important part of the temple's visual identity.
The temple is accessible daily and sits within walking distance of Siam University on the opposite bank. A terrace area on the grounds serves a specific purpose during the Songkran festival.
The grounds contain Bangkok's only sand terrace, an unusual architectural feature found nowhere else in the city. Additionally, murals positioned near the floor level of the main hall depict traditional Thai idioms and expressions.
