Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport, airport in Thailand
Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport is an international airport in the Ban Du area of northern Thailand, serving the city of Chiang Rai. The terminal is a single-level building with retail shops, cafes, and information desks, laid out in a way that makes it easy to move from check-in to boarding without long walks.
The airport opened in 1992 and gradually expanded its routes to connect northern Thailand with other parts of Asia. International connections to destinations such as Macau, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur were added over time, turning what started as a regional hub into a gateway with broader reach.
The airport is named after Princess Srinagarindra, mother of a former Thai king, with Mae Fah Luang meaning 'Royal Mother' in Thai. Inside the terminal, travelers can see local artwork and traditional crafts from nearby hill tribe villages, giving an immediate feel for the region before even leaving the building.
The airport sits about 5 miles (8 km) from central Chiang Rai and can be reached by taxi, shared shuttle, or rental car, with car rental desks available inside the terminal. Signage throughout the building is in both Thai and English, so finding your way around is straightforward even on a first visit.
The airport is currently developing an aircraft maintenance center on its grounds, something rarely found at a regional airport of this size. At the same time, it is growing as a cargo point for agricultural products and handmade crafts from the Chiang Rai area, giving local producers a direct link to export markets.
