Wat Sanphet, 15th century royal temple in Yai Cha, Thailand
Wat Sanphet is a 15th-century temple located within a former palace complex in Yai Cha. The site is defined by three brick stupas arranged in parallel, which in their simple yet dignified form establish the structure of the location.
The temple was founded in 1448 by King Borommatrailokanat as part of his palace complex. It played a significant role in the early development of religious architecture during the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
The temple served as a place of royal worship where only select individuals were permitted entry for centuries. The three stupas arranged side by side reflect the significance different rulers attached to this sacred location.
Access is available through Sri Sanphet Road with clear signage directing to the entrance. Visitors should prepare for uneven ground between the stupas and wear sturdy footwear.
Inside the central stupa once stood a monumental Buddha statue adorned with precious materials. During later conflicts, this figure was destroyed and lost its original form.
