Monastir

Monastir is a city on a peninsula between the Gulf of Hammamet and the Bay of Al-Munastīr along Tunisia's coast. It extends across sandy beaches and rocky shorelines, dominated by the striking Ribat fortress that overlooks the water.

Phoenician and Roman settlements called Ruspinum laid the foundations for this city, while the Ribat fortress built in the 2nd century defined its medieval character. The fort was part of a defensive network protecting the coast from raids.

The Islamic Arts Museum inside the Ribat showcases handwritten manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics that reflect the artistic traditions of this region across different periods. Visitors can observe these works and understand how craftspeople have maintained these skills across generations.

The city connects to major cities through the Sahel Metro train line and has an international airport nearby for convenient access. Wearing comfortable shoes and avoiding midday heat is wise when exploring the city and its coastal areas on foot.

The mausoleum of Tunisia's first president, Habib Bourguiba, sits in a central cemetery with white marble columns and gilded domes that stand out prominently. The structure shows the architectural care invested in memorials of national importance.
