Ribat of Monastir, Coastal fortress in Monastir, Tunisia
The Ribat of Monastir is a coastal fortress with thick stone walls, watchtowers, and multiple levels arranged around a central courtyard. The cells are organized around the inner structure, and the entire complex shows the typical layout of a defensive Mediterranean structure.
The fortress was founded in the late 8th century and initially served as protection against maritime attacks. It was later rebuilt and expanded during Arab and Ottoman rule.
The ribat holds an Islamic museum displaying wooden items and ceramics from different periods. The former prayer hall shows how religious life was connected to coastal defense in this place.
The climb to the watchtower platform involves narrow stairs and requires effort, making it challenging for some visitors. The view from above overlooks the harbor, beaches, and surrounding coastal landscape.
The building served as a filming location for international film productions, including a well-known comedy and a religious miniseries. These appearances in film productions brought worldwide attention to the fortress.
