Bourguiba Mausoleum, Presidential mausoleum in Monastir, Tunisia
The Bourguiba Mausoleum is a memorial building in Monastir featuring a central golden dome with two green cupolas flanking it. Twin 25-meter minarets decorated with traditional Tunisian ornaments and marble details frame the structure.
Construction began in 1963 under architect Olivier-Clément Cacoub and was completed in 1978. The building houses the remains of President Habib Bourguiba, who led Tunisia to independence and shaped its modern development.
The building displays Arabic inscriptions on its main entrance that recognize Bourguiba's role in shaping modern Tunisia. Visitors can read how the monument honors his leadership during the independence movement.
A small museum inside displays personal items of the president including his desk, passports, clothing, and photographs. The collection helps visitors understand more about his life and work.
A 200-meter-long marble corridor leads through the building to three separate halls containing the tombs of Bourguiba, his first wife Mathilde, and other family members. This extended pathway creates a solemn experience as visitors move deeper into the memorial.
