Sousse

Sousse is a port city on the Tunisian Mediterranean coast where a walled old town with narrow streets stands beside modern residential areas. The ancient Medina is enclosed by stone walls, and beyond them lie palm-lined streets leading toward beaches and commercial zones.

The city was founded by Phoenicians and was known as Hadrumetum before later becoming a Roman colony. During Roman times it grew into an important trading center on the Mediterranean.

The Great Mosque within the Medina dates to the 9th century and features a spacious courtyard surrounded by simple columns that reflect medieval Islamic design. Visitors can walk through the courtyard and experience how this place serves as a spiritual center for the community.

The city is easy to navigate and visitors can explore the compact Medina on foot, with flat terrain making walking straightforward. Shade is limited in many areas, so it is wise to walk in early morning or late afternoon and bring water.

The Archaeological Museum in the Kasbah holds a notable collection of Roman mosaics depicting scenes from ancient daily life with remarkable detail. These mosaics show household items and family scenes that reveal how people actually lived during Roman times.
