Abthugni

Abthugni is a Roman settlement in Zaghouan Governorate with well-preserved structures from ancient times. The site contains temples, bath complexes, public buildings, and other structures that reflect how the town was organized.

The settlement gained city status under Emperor Hadrian and was later used as a Byzantine fortress. This transformation shows how important the location was for controlling the region.

The ruins display Roman architectural styles with structures like temples and public squares that remain visible today. You can see how people organized their shared spaces during that era.

The site is walkable along established paths that run through the various ancient structures. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and be mindful of the sun, as most areas offer little shade.

Inscriptions and architectural elements from multiple periods were found here, showing that people lived at this location over a long span of time. The remains document continuous settlement from the Roman through Byzantine eras.
