Lake of Bizerte, Nature reserve and lake in Bizerte Governorate, Tunisia.
Lake of Bizerte is a large body of water in northern Tunisia with shallow areas and deeper zones. The lake is divided by several peninsulas and features an irregular shoreline with multiple bays and inlets.
The region was an important center in ancient times with Phoenician settlements established nearby. Later, Romans and Ottomans valued the area for its strategic position on the Mediterranean coast.
Local fishing communities maintain traditional methods of shellfish harvesting, producing 120 tons of oysters and mussels each year from the lake waters.
The water is easily accessible from land at several points and offers viewing areas across the water. Visitors should note that certain areas may have limited access due to industrial activity in the region.
The water body functions as both a freshwater reservoir and as a harbor for commercial ships and repair docks. This dual purpose makes it an important economic site for the region.
