Bizerte

Bizerte is an administrative region in northern Tunisia with considerable geographic diversity. The area spans two significant lakes, long Mediterranean coastlines with varied beaches, and extensive agricultural land in its interior.

The region is home to ancient Utica, a Phoenician foundation older than Carthage that later served as a major Roman administrative center in North Africa. This early importance shaped the area and its Mediterranean connection for centuries.

The name traces back to the Phoenician settlement that once flourished here. Coastal areas today still carry traces of this maritime past in their appearance and how people use the beaches and harbor spaces.

The region connects to the capital through direct road links and regular transport services between Bizerte city and Tunis. Visitors can explore different parts on foot or using local transport, depending on whether they are drawn to beaches, lakes, or inland areas.

Lake Ichkeul within the region is the last remaining lake system of its kind across all of North Africa. It stands as a remnant of a water landscape that once extended across Morocco and Algeria and now survives only here.
