Necropolis of Kerkouane

The necropolis contains numerous vaults carved into a seaside hill, featuring four main chamber-tombs and an extended burial ground along the Mediterranean coast.

A local Islamic teacher discovered the necropolis in 1929, uncovering valuable artifacts including jewelry, ceramics, and scarab gems within the ancient tombs.

Archaeologists found multiple artifacts in the tombs, including bones, eggs, altars, amulets, bronze coins, razors, and toiletries from the Phoenician-Punic period.

Access to the necropolis requires several hours of driving from major Tunisian cities, and visitors should note the site closes early and remains shut on Mondays.

The red-painted sarcophagus discovered at the site features a carved cover depicting the goddess Astarte, representing one of few surviving Punic wood carvings.
