Ennejma Ezzahra, Neo-Moorish palace in Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia.
Ennejma Ezzahra is a Neo-Moorish palace in Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The building combines European architecture with Arab-Islamic elements such as tiled floors, carved plasterwork, wooden paneling, and open arcades.
The palace was commissioned in the early 20th century by Baron Rodolphe d'Erlanger, a French-British painter and musicologist. After his death, his family transferred the property to the Tunisian state, which turned it into a museum and music center.
The building now houses a center for Arab-Andalusian music, where instruments, manuscripts, and scores are on display. Visitors can see how these musical traditions were practiced and passed on across generations.
The property sits in the historic village of Sidi Bou Said and can be reached on foot from the village's main square. Visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter and gives more time to explore the rooms and outdoor areas without crowds.
Baron d'Erlanger spent much of his life documenting Arab music and wrote a multi-volume work on its theory and history. This work is still considered an important reference for musicologists in the field today.
