Villa Baizeau

Villa Baizeau is a modernist residence in Carthage positioned on elevated ground with expansive windows overlooking the Gulf of Tunis and Bou Kornine mountains. The structure features clean lines and open floor plans characteristic of modernist design, with white surfaces and careful attention to light and spatial flow.

In 1928, a wealthy businessman named Lucien Baizeau commissioned a renowned architect to design this residence. This marked the architect's only constructed project on the African continent, reflecting his influence on modernist architecture in the region.

The residence demonstrates how European modern design principles were adapted to North African climate needs through its ventilation system and sun-shading elements. Walking through the spaces, visitors can observe these practical solutions directly integrated into the windows and openings.

The residence is located within the Presidential Palace grounds in Carthage and is not currently open to visitors. From outside the fence, you can still appreciate its architectural features and the landscaping that frames the structure.

The commissioned architect designed the entire residence without visiting Tunisia, relying only on photographs and topographical information from local experts. Despite this distance, he created a building that perfectly suited the local climate and landscape.
