Lac de Gafsa, Desert lake near Gafsa, Tunisia
Lac de Gafsa is a lake that formed in the Tunisian desert within a phosphate mining area. It is surrounded by rocky shores, and the water color can shift noticeably depending on conditions.
The lake appeared in 2014 when underground water broke through cracks in the rock of a mining area. Its sudden formation in an otherwise dry landscape drew attention from scientists and locals alike.
Many visitors come here to swim in the desert, which is an unusual experience for this part of Tunisia. The water draws people from nearby towns, who treat the spot as a natural gathering place.
The lake sits east of Gafsa and can be reached by road without major difficulty. There are no facilities on site, so visitors should bring water and any supplies they need.
Despite the inviting water, authorities have at times warned against swimming due to possible chemical contamination linked to nearby mining activity. Yet the lake continues to attract swimmers regardless.
