Palais Mussolini, Italian-style palace in Bou Argoub, Tunisia.
The Palais Mussolini is an Italian-style residential building in Bou Argoub featuring a circular atrium topped by a concrete dome. The structure has two levels, each with elaborate animal and zodiac sign mosaics covering the floor surfaces.
Italian architect Ugo Chiarini designed the residence in 1935 for the Garsia family, wealthy Italian landowners of the region. The building was later mistakenly associated with Mussolini, though it was constructed as a private dwelling rather than as an official seat.
The interior floors display detailed mosaics showing Roman soldiers, gladiators, and African animals like ostriches, giraffes, and gazelles. These images reflect what wealthy Italian residents of the area admired and valued in their surroundings.
The building is in poor condition, with multiple areas closed off due to safety concerns and current occupation by local residents. Visitors should expect limited access, as some interior sections may be restricted from entry.
The building earned its alternative name Villa Zodiac from the astrological mosaic designs that decorate the entire first floor. These intricate zodiac representations make this decorative element one of the most striking features inside.
