Eastern Anatolia Region, Mountainous region in eastern Turkey

Eastern Anatolia is a large territory in the eastern part of Turkey, stretching across high mountains, broad plateaus, and deep valleys. The landscape shifts between bare slopes, green pastures, and lakes surrounded by dormant volcanoes.

The Turkish government defined this territory as a separate region during a geographic conference in 1941 to unify the management of the country. Even before this formal division, the eastern highlands served for centuries as a passage for caravans and migrating herders.

In the villages across this territory, families still gather in traditional stone houses with thick walls designed to shield against harsh winter temperatures. Local inhabitants prepare cheese and yogurt using time-honored methods, and they often share meals around low tables while sheep herds move across the highlands outside.

Visitors planning to explore this territory in winter should bring warm clothing and waterproof footwear, as snow and temperatures below freezing are common. Roads between provinces usually remain open, but smaller routes at higher altitudes may close for weeks at a time.

Lake Van sits at over 1700 meters (around 5600 feet) above sea level and is the largest soda lake in the world, giving the water a slightly salty taste. The water appears deep blue in summer and attracts many birds each year that rest along the shallow shores.
