Erdek, District and town in Balıkesir Province, Turkey
Erdek is a town and district on the northwestern coast of the Sea of Marmara in Balıkesir Province. The area stretches across roughly 300 square kilometers with beaches, fishing villages, and olive groves that spread along the shore and into the inland countryside.
The settlement was known as Artake in ancient times and served as a port and trading point for the region. It experienced periods of growth and change through Byzantine and Ottoman rule before becoming the modern town it is today.
Fish markets and shops in town sell fresh seafood, olive oil, and local produce that reflect how deeply maritime and farming traditions shape daily life here. The way fishing and agriculture coexist gives the place its character and rhythm.
Buses connect the town to other Turkish cities, and coastal roads make it easy to reach beaches and neighboring areas. Visitors should plan ahead, especially if they want to explore multiple villages or different bays.
The area comprises roughly 20 rural villages and several small fishing ports, each with its own connection to local communities and maritime work. This scattered arrangement means each village has developed its own character and local flavor.
