Kirazlı Monastery

Kirazlı Monastery is a two-story stone structure at the base of Mount Didymus on the Kapıdağ Peninsula, with high walls and remnants of what was originally around one hundred rooms. The building displays the typical Byzantine construction style with solid stone masonry throughout.

The monastery was constructed in the 19th century and served as a religious center until it was abandoned in 1922. This closure marked the end of an era for monastic life in the area.

The monastery served as a spiritual center for Greek residents in the area, housing a revered religious icon that now resides in Istanbul.

The site is located about 8 kilometers from Erdek and can be reached by a drive of approximately 20 minutes on unpaved roads. The journey passes by ancient ruins and through rural areas, so preparation for rough conditions is helpful.

Three standing walls rise among thick vegetation and natural springs can be found scattered along the approach path. These water sources were once vital for the people living at the monastery.
