Marmara Prison, State prison in Silivri, Turkey
Marmara Prison is a state penal institution in Silivri, Turkey, organized into nine separate building blocks across a large compound. Each block follows an L-shaped layout and houses multiple inmate sections.
The facility was built between 2005 and 2008 to replace the outdated Bayrampaşa Prison as Istanbul expanded and required modern facilities. The new site was developed on the city's outskirts to meet contemporary standards for detention space.
The prison complex includes educational facilities, workshops, a mosque, sports grounds, and a library to support inmate rehabilitation and daily activities.
The prison lies about nine kilometers west of Silivri town center along the E84 highway. Entry points use biometric checks and iris scanners for all visitors.
At opening, the facility was Europe's largest detention center with capacity for over ten thousand prisoners. The entire site is covered by two parallel surveillance systems.
