Agios Sergios

Agios Sergios, Kirchengebäude in der Türkei

Agios Sergios is a church ruin from the Byzantine period with thick stone walls and a simple rectangular structure. The building shows medieval craftsmanship with a sturdy entrance and tall walls that once held icons and frescoes inside.

The church was built around 780 as part of a larger monastery complex where monks lived and prayed. In the early 1900s, the Greek-speaking community left the area after conflicts, and the building fell into disrepair and became ruins.

The name Agios Sergios refers to Saint Sergius, an important figure in the early Christian community of this region. The ruins stand among traditional houses in old Tirilye, showing how different cultures and religions lived together for centuries.

The ruins are accessible during daylight and can be explored on foot, with natural light highlighting the textures of the old stone. Nearby streets in Tirilye lead here, and the surrounding fields and low hills offer a quiet place for walking and reflection.

A damaged inscription above the entrance door bears the date 1801, showing how the local community rebuilt the structure after a major fire. This spirit of resilience remains visible in the old stonework today.
