Yeşil Mosque Iznik, Ottoman mosque in Iznik, Turkey.
The Yeşil Mosque is an early Ottoman mosque in Iznik with a central dome measuring about 10.5 meters in diameter, supported by marble columns and decorated with geometric patterns on its walls. The interior is organized with an open portico and a decorated prayer hall.
The building was constructed between 1378 and 1391 under Grand Vizier Çandarlı Kara Halil Hayreddin Pasha during Sultan Murad I's reign. The architect Hacı bin Musa shaped its appearance during this formative period of Ottoman architecture.
The mosque demonstrates early Ottoman design with its three-bay portico and gray marble panels in the prayer hall, reflecting the architectural vocabulary of its period.
The mosque is located near the Lefke Gate on Museum Street and remains open for daily prayers. Visitors should be prepared for modest opening hours and dress respectfully to honor the sacred space.
The minaret is covered with glazed terra-cotta tiles in green, yellow, turquoise, and dark purple, which inspired the mosque's name Yeşil, meaning green. These colorful tiles remain visible today and create a striking visual feature.
