Bayezid I Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Yildirim district, Bursa, Turkey

Bayezid I Mosque is an Ottoman-era place of worship featuring a spacious central prayer hall beneath a large dome, with smaller domes covering the surrounding spaces. Fireplaces positioned along the sides provided heating, creating distinct areas throughout the structure.

The complex was built between 1391 and 1395 under Sultan Bayezid I as an important example of early Ottoman architecture. A major earthquake in 1855 caused significant damage, leading to substantial restoration work that preserved its structure.

This place served as the heart of a religious and social complex, where believers gathered not just for prayer but also for education and healing. You can still sense this multifunctional purpose when walking through the surrounding buildings.

The building is located northeast of Bursa's center and welcomes visitors daily from sunrise to sunset at no charge. Visiting early in the day offers better light to appreciate the architectural details and dome structures.

This mosque was the first to introduce the Bursa arch technique, an innovative vaulting system that became widely adopted in later Ottoman buildings. The entire structure was built exclusively from cut stone blocks rather than bricks, a choice that gave it exceptional durability.
