Rákóczi Museum, House museum in Tekirdağ, Turkey
The Rákóczi Museum is a house museum in Tekirdağ housed in a three-story wooden building with ten rooms. The structure displays traditional Ottoman architecture with carved wooden ceilings and stained glass windows throughout its interior.
Francis II Rákóczi, Prince of Transylvania, came to this house in exile after his struggle against Habsburg rule and settled here in 1720. He spent his final 15 years in this residence until his death in 1735.
The museum displays everyday items from the Rákóczi family, including weapons, ceramics, and personal letters that show what life was like during their time away from home. These collections help visitors understand the story of an exiled princely family through real objects.
The museum sits in the old town and is easy to reach on foot with clear signage for orientation. Access to the upper floors involves climbing narrow stairs, so comfortable shoes are helpful for exploring the entire space.
A wooden chair carved by Rákóczi himself sits in one of the museum rooms as a remarkable handmade piece. The chair features intricate metal decorations shaped like flowers and fruits, showing the craftsmanship of the exiled prince.
