Tbeti Monastery

Tbeti Monastery, Medieval monastery ruins in Artvin Province, Turkey

Description

Tbeti Monastery consists of stone ruins of a religious complex in Artvin Province in northeastern Anatolia at approximately 1238 meters elevation. The remains are surrounded by terraced agricultural fields and woodland, displaying the structural characteristics of a medieval building.

History

The monastery was constructed in the 10th century as a significant example of medieval Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. It was built during a period when Georgian cultural and religious influences were strong throughout this region of Anatolia.

Culture

The structure displays Georgian building traditions and Orthodox Christian monuments that reflect the strong connection to Georgian religious practices in this region. Visitors can observe these influences in the stonework details and the layout of the buildings.

Practical

The route to reach this site starts from Şavşat Kalesi castle toward Karagöl, then continues on an unpaved road along the river valley. Visitors should be prepared for challenging terrain and variable weather conditions typical of this mountainous area.

Did you know?

The monastery occupies an elevated position that makes it stand out among the religious structures of the province. This remote location has kept the ruins less familiar to visitors compared to other archaeological sites in the region.
