Trabzon, Port city in Eastern Black Sea region, Turkey.
Trabzon is a port city on the eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey, spreading between mountain slopes and the shoreline. Narrow alleys wind through neighborhoods of multistory houses, while modern apartment blocks occupy the hilltops above the center.
Greek settlers from Miletus founded the settlement in the mid-8th century BC as a trading post on the Black Sea. The Empire of Trebizond existed here from the early 13th century until Ottoman conquest in the second half of the 15th century.
The name derives from Greek Trapezus, referring to the table-shaped headland where the old town sits. Local teahouses line the streets near Atatürk Pavilion, where residents sip black tea from small glasses while gazing at the mountain backdrop.
Visitors can explore the city on foot, as many sights lie within the central neighborhoods. Minibus lines connect outlying districts, and the coastal climate remains mild throughout the year, with frequent rain during autumn and winter.
A network of fountains stretches along the waterfront promenade, where locals stroll on warm evenings. The fish restaurants in the port district serve hamsi, tiny anchovies caught from the Black Sea in winter and considered a regional specialty.
