Maltepe, Administrative district on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey

Maltepe is an administrative district on Istanbul's Asian shore, stretching roughly 7 kilometers along the Marmara Sea. The area contains 18 neighborhoods across approximately 53 square kilometers, with a mix of residential districts and coastal areas.

The district originated from the ancient Byzantine settlement of Bryas, where a 9th-century imperial palace inspired by Baghdad stood as a sign of royal power. This early prominence shaped how the area developed over time.

The Cumhuriyet Mosque anchors the district center with its traditional Turkish design and four minarets. It serves as a gathering place where visitors can observe local spiritual practices and see how the community gathers for daily worship.

The district connects to central Istanbul through metro lines and the D-100 Highway, which runs through the area and divides it into sections. Familiarizing yourself with these main routes helps you navigate between neighborhoods more easily.

Maltepe was part of the neighboring Kartal district until separating in 1992 to become independent. The first local election in the newly formed district took place in 1994, establishing its own governance.
