Hasankeyf, Archaeological site near Tigris River, Turkey

Hasankeyf is an ancient settlement spanning both banks of the Tigris River, with numerous caves, rock formations, and remains left by multiple civilizations over millennia. The area has been partially submerged by the Ilisu Dam, with many pieces relocated to a new cultural park to preserve them.

From the 12th to 15th centuries, it became a major trading hub under Artukid and Ayyubid rule along the Silk Road trade routes. The buildings and layout from this prosperous period still define what you see when you visit today.

Religious structures from different periods sit alongside one another, showing how building methods changed over time across Islamic, Byzantine, and earlier traditions. You can see these layers of construction when walking through the remaining structures.

Access to the site is limited to certain areas as parts remain underwater, so check ahead to see what sections are actually open for visiting. Wear sturdy shoes since paths are uneven and exploring involves climbing up and down rocky slopes.

More than 300 medieval monuments were recorded here before the waters rose, making this one of Turkey's largest collections of medieval remains in a single place. Although many now lie beneath the dam's waters, the rescued artifacts continue to tell the story of this once-thriving settlement.
