Old Bridge, Hasankeyf

The Old Bridge of Hasankeyf crossed the Tigris River on four stone arches, supported by two massive piers built from stone, brick, and wood. The structure displayed advanced construction techniques of its era with impressive proportions.

Built between 1147 and 1167 by Artuqid Turkmens, the structure became a vital crossing point across the river. One of its central arches was exceptionally large for the time period.

The bridge served as a meeting point where merchants and travelers from different regions gathered to trade goods and share customs. This location shaped how different cultures lived together in the ancient city.

The remains are now underwater because the construction of the Ilisu Dam flooded the area in 2020. Visitors can explore the site only through special guided excursions or digital resources offered by local museums.

The structure contained defensive passages within its walls, showing advanced military engineering techniques. These hidden passages allowed defenders to control and protect the crossing.
