Monastery of Mor Augin

Monastery of Mor Augin is an ancient Christian site near Nusaybin consisting of multiple stone buildings connected by pathways across the mountainside. These structures form a religious complex that has stood on the slopes for many centuries.

The monastery was founded in the fourth century when religious teachers came from Egypt to spread Christianity in the region. Over the centuries, it passed between different church communities before eventually being used by the Syriac Orthodox Church.

The monastery served as a center for Syriac Orthodox monks who gathered here to pray and study. The church and surrounding buildings still show signs of this religious community that lived and worked here for centuries.

The site is located in a mountainous area far from Nusaybin and requires transportation to reach it. It is wise to prepare for the journey and bring suitable equipment, as the location is remote and conditions are basic.

A cave beneath the southern altar holds the remains of an early Christian teacher who inspired the founding of this site. This hidden chamber draws few visitors and remains a quiet testament to the place's importance in early Christian history.
