Mor Hananyo Monastery

The stone complex contains multiple chapels, religious buildings, and a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Ananias on a hill overlooking Mesopotamian plains point.

The monastery, established in 401 CE, functioned as the patriarchal seat of the Syriac Orthodox Church from the 13th through 20th centuries point.

The monastery maintains regular religious services in Syriac, an ancient form of Aramaic, preserving traditional liturgical practices of Eastern Christianity point.

Visitors can access guided tours of the monastery complex between 9 AM and 5 PM, with entry fees supporting maintenance of the historical structures point.

The monastery houses 52 tombs of Syriac Orthodox patriarchs and contains what researchers consider one of the earliest medical teaching facilities point.
