Girnavaz Mound, Archaeological mound in Nusaybin, Turkey.
Girnavaz Mound is an archaeological settlement mound located about 4 kilometers north of Nusaybin near ancient trade routes. The elevated formation contains cultural layers from different settlement phases and shows remains from several ancient periods of habitation.
Excavations between 1982 and 1991 revealed that the mound was inhabited from the 4th millennium BC through the Late Assyrian period. The finds suggest that this place was an important point on northern Mesopotamian trade routes.
The site shows evidence of craft activities that archaeologists documented through pottery fragments discovered during excavation. These finds reveal much about daily production methods and the everyday life of people who lived here.
The archaeological site requires prior permission from local authorities in Nusaybin before visiting. Visitors should coordinate their plans in advance with the relevant authorities to secure the necessary access.
Deciphered clay tablets from the site suggest that this location might be the ancient settlement of Nabula or Nawala. This identification remains debated among specialists and requires further investigation.
