Mor Hobil Mor Abrohom Monastery

Mor Hobil Mor Abrohom is a monastery in Midyat with stone walls standing on a plateau and displaying traditional Syriac architecture, including finely carved elements. The complex contains various structures and a space that functioned as a baptistry.

The monastery was founded in 481 and built on a site where the ascetic Abel lived on a pillar in the fifth century. This connection to an early holy figure made the location an important spiritual center.

The monastery remains an active place of Syriac Orthodox worship where daily prayers continue and the community gathers regularly. The site embodies centuries of spiritual practice maintained by those who have lived and worshipped here.

The monastery sits about one kilometer from central Midyat and is reachable on foot via a path through vineyards. Local minibuses also offer transportation for those preferring not to walk.

Within the complex stands the Dome of Theodora, a stone structure that served as a baptistry and displays architectural elements resembling those from Constantinople. This connection to Byzantine designs shows how distant places were influenced by larger centers of power.
