Midyat, Administrative district in Mardin Province, Turkey.
The district of Midyat extends across 1,241 square kilometers of southeastern Turkey, featuring limestone buildings and narrow streets in its old quarters.
Ancient tablets from the 9th century BCE mention Midyat as Matiate, through which Assyrian kings Assurnasirpal II and Shalmaneser III conducted military campaigns.
Midyat retains churches and monasteries from its Syriac Christian past, while modern residents include Kurdish, Arab, and Assyrian communities speaking different languages.
The district functions as a commercial center with markets selling regional products, traditional silver jewelry, textiles, and agricultural goods from surrounding farms.
Under the streets of Midyat lies an ancient underground city dating back 1,900 years that once housed 70,000 inhabitants.
