Hassuni Caves

Hassuni Caves consist of interconnected natural chambers near Silvan with rock formations that developed over millennia, containing man-made water storage systems carved into the stone. The complex also holds a small carved gathering space and stone stairways linking different levels.

Humans first inhabited these caves during the Mesolithic period and continued living here through many subsequent ages. Later communities built a stone church that remained in use until around the 13th century.

The site shows signs of religious devotion across different faiths, with inscriptions and built spaces that reveal how communities gathered here to pray and worship over centuries.

Access to different chambers is possible, but some areas can be slippery or uneven underfoot, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Bringing a flashlight or lamp is helpful as the interior remains dark throughout.

In 2019, researchers found inscriptions in ancient Aramaic language carved on a stone marking a priest's burial place. This discovery revealed just how long religious communities valued and used this location for spiritual purposes.
