Saint George Church

Saint George Church is a religious building in the inner citadel of Diyarbakır with two rectangular chambers, each covered by an oval dome. The construction uses brick and stone combined to support both rooms.

The building was founded in the 3rd century and went through several major changes over the following centuries. It served different purposes including storage and confinement before modern restoration began.

The building shows a blend of Byzantine elements with Islamic influences added over time through its layout and architectural details. This combination in the walls reflects the long shared history of the region.

The building is being restored and will become an exhibition space connected to the Diyarbakır Museum. Visitors should check if work is finished since access may be limited during renovation.

The eastern chamber still preserves original architecture from Byzantine times while the western side shows clear marks of later changes. This visible difference allows visitors to spot the distinct building phases directly.
