Deva Hammam, Historic hammam in Sur district, Diyarbakır, Turkey.
Deva Hammam is a bathhouse in the Sur neighborhood featuring an octagonal dome held up by eight supporting columns, all built from basalt and rubble stone. The structure includes separate areas for changing clothes and bathing activities.
This bathhouse was built around 1600 and became known as Büyük Hamam due to its sizeable structure compared to other baths in the area. Its construction during that period reflects the architectural traditions of the time.
The bathhouse serves as a meeting place where neighbors and visitors gather not only to bathe but also to socialize and catch up with one another. This role as a social hub remains important to the community today.
The bathhouse is located on Gazi Street between the Balıkçılarbaşı junction and Mardinkapı. When planning a visit, keep in mind that traditional baths operate at specific times and have designated areas for different groups of visitors.
Local stories speak of a lost camel discovered at this location, a tale that became part of the place's alternative name. Such stories reflect how the community remembers and identifies their neighborhood landmarks.
