Hazreti Süleyman Mosque, 12th-century mosque in Sur district, Diyarbakır, Turkey

Hazreti Süleyman Mosque is a stone structure in Sur that combines architectural features from two different building periods. The building contains a rectangular prayer hall with traditional Turkish decorative patterns integrated throughout its design.

Construction took place between 1155 and 1169 under Nisanoglu Ebul Kasim on a site where companions of Prophet Muhammad had been buried. This connection to early Islamic history established the location as a religiously significant structure.

The mosque serves as a memorial to 27 companions of Prophet Muhammad, whose names appear on stones throughout the site and help visitors understand its spiritual importance. This sacred function shapes how people move through and use the space today, making it a place of pilgrimage and prayer for many.

The main entrance in Sur district provides direct access, with separate prayer areas set aside for men and women. Dress modestly and be aware of prayer times to respect the space while other worshippers are present.

The structure showcases architectural layers from two distinct periods, with Inalid foundations forming the base while Ottoman repairs and modifications were added later. This visible layering tells the story of how the building was continuously maintained and adapted across centuries.
