Yeghrdut monastery, Armenian monastery in Muş Province, Turkey
Yeghrdut is a monastery complex in Muş Province featuring several churches built in Armenian architectural style. The site consists of four distinct places of worship, including the Church of Saint John and the Church of Astvatzatzin, forming a unified religious ensemble.
The monastery was founded in the late 200s following the discovery of sacred Christian relics in the woodland areas nearby. Over centuries it developed into an important religious center that attracted scholars and pilgrims from surrounding regions.
The site served as a gathering place where Armenian Christians gathered to worship and participate in religious ceremonies across multiple chapels. Each church held its own role in the spiritual life of the community throughout the centuries.
The site is located roughly 22 kilometers northwest of Muş city in rural countryside. Reaching it requires traveling through unpaved and uneven terrain, so visitors should prepare for off-road conditions and bring guidance or a vehicle.
The name Yeghrdut comes from a local herb that once grew abundantly in this area and was well known to inhabitants. The original name Myuronaman referred to a sacred vessel connected to early Christian religious practices and ceremonies.
