Lake Akdoğan, Volcanic lake in Varto, Turkey
Lake Akdoğan extends across 11 square kilometers at an elevation of 2,149 meters, reaching depths of 21 meters in the eastern mountains.
The surrounding mountains contained the Xamurpert castle, governed by a Sasun dynasty until the 1760s in this strategic mountain location.
Local communities near Lake Akdoğan refer to it by different names, including Hamurpert Lake in Turkish and Gola Xamirpêtê ya Mezin in Kurdish.
The lake surface freezes during winter months, allowing ice skating activities, while summer permits fishing for abundant mirror carp.
