Nemrut

Nemrut is a stratovolcano in Bitlis Province, Turkey, rising on the western shore of Lake Van with a summit just under 3000 meters above sea level. The caldera forms a wide bowl with several lakes inside and rough rock walls marking the rim.

The volcano showed signs of activity in the 15th century, when reports mentioned smoke and thunder-like sounds coming from the mountain. Since then, geologists have not documented further eruptions, though the region remains seismically active.

Local people call this mountain Nemrut Dağı and regard it as a landmark on the western side of Lake Van. Fishermen sometimes visit the crater lakes, where fish have adapted to the cool freshwater and high elevation.

The circuit around the crater rim takes several hours and passes through loose rock and steep sections. Sure footing and sturdy footwear are advisable, as weather can change quickly.

Hot springs emerge at some spots within the caldera and create steaming areas next to the cold lakes. These thermal features remind visitors that geological processes continue beneath the surface.
