Lake Van

Lake Van is a landlocked body of water in the eastern part of the country, stretching between mountain ranges with no outlet to the sea. The surface appears calm or choppy depending on the wind, while the water shows a milky turquoise color caused by dissolved minerals.

Volcanic eruptions created a natural barrier long ago that trapped water in this basin. Later civilizations built settlements and fortresses along the shores, whose ruins remain visible today.

The name comes from the Urartian word for fortress, referring to the settlements along the shores. Today fishermen use small boats and traditional nets while families picnic by the water and children play among the stones at the shoreline.

The shoreline areas are accessible from different roads, with some sections offering flat approaches and others having steep slopes. Weather changes quickly, so bring extra clothing and watch for wind conditions.

On some days white crystals form along the shoreline, left behind as the water dries and resembling snow. Under certain light conditions reflections of the surrounding mountains appear on the water surface, becoming particularly clear in the early morning.
