Bitlis Province

Bitlis Province extends across 8,294 square kilometers of diverse terrain, from mountainous regions to the western shores of Lake Van at 1,559 meters elevation.

The province changed rulers multiple times through centuries, including Armenian kingdoms, Byzantine Empire, Persian Il-Khanids, and Ottoman administration until 1847.

The province contains seven districts with different cultural elements, including the ancient Ahlat Seljuk Cemetery and numerous theological schools from early periods.

The region experiences continental climate in 57 percent of its territory and Mediterranean influences in 43 percent, with long winters and heavy snowfall.

Lake Nemrut, formed in a volcanic crater, represents one of the largest crater lakes in the world, located within the boundaries of Bitlis Province.
