Bitlis

Bitlis is a city in the mountains of eastern Turkey, located at about 1500 meters elevation. It stretches through a narrow valley along the Bitlis River, surrounded by steep mountain slopes that create natural barriers and passages toward Lake Van.

The city began in the 7th century when Arab conquerors established it as a capital for emirs. This early importance led to centuries of control over the region.

Artisans work with Ahlat stone and maintain traditional masonry skills that shape the city's appearance. These techniques are visible in buildings throughout the town and passed down through families.

The city experiences long winters with heavy snowfall, so bring appropriate winter clothing and sturdy gear. The warmer months are better for exploring the old town and hiking around the valley.

The medieval castle was built from local stone and contains chambers with passages showing advanced engineering. The tunnel systems inside suggest the structure was designed for defense and supply during sieges.
