Ahlat, Administrative district in Bitlis Province, Turkey
Ahlat is an administrative district on the northwestern shore of Lake Van in Bitlis Province. The area includes several villages and two municipalities spread across hilly terrain that meets the shore of the large lake.
The area was originally part of Van Province until it was transferred to Bitlis Province in 1936. This administrative change linked the region to a larger regional center and shaped its modern structure.
The Seljuk cemetery here displays carved tombstones that reflect centuries of local burial customs and regional traditions. These stone monuments shape the landscape today and tell the story of the people who lived in this place.
The best time to visit is spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the landscape is green. Those exploring the archaeological sites should wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.
The area is known for potato farming, a crop that shapes Turkish agriculture significantly. These farming lands and related practices are woven into daily life here.
